From 5 March to 23 April 2022, JUPEBIM organised an International Sign (IS) Workshop. The 10-session course was led by Noppawan Chainarong, a Deaf educator and interpreter from Thailand.

The workshop introduced participants to International Sign, a form of signed communication used at international Deaf events, conferences and gatherings. It helps Deaf people from different countries, who use different national sign languages, communicate with one another.

For Malaysian participants, learning IS opened up opportunities to connect with the global Deaf community beyond Malaysian Sign Language (BIM).

Workshop Schedule

The course ran over eight weeks, with every session held from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM:

  • Session 1: Saturday, 5 March 2022
  • Session 2: Saturday, 12 March 2022
  • Session 3: Wednesday, 30 March 2022
  • Session 4: Saturday, 2 April 2022
  • Session 5: Wednesday, 6 April 2022
  • Session 6: Saturday, 9 April 2022
  • Session 7: Wednesday, 13 April 2022
  • Session 8: Saturday, 16 April 2022
  • Session 9: Wednesday, 20 April 2022
  • Session 10: Saturday, 23 April 2022

The multi-session format let participants build their International Sign skills step by step. Regular practice between sessions helped reinforce what they learned.
