During the 2021 pandemic period, JUPEBIM kept its community connected through the Jom BerBIM Roundtable Series. These were regular online discussions that brought together Deaf and hearing members, sign language interpreters, and people learning Malaysian Sign Language (BIM).

The name “Jom BerBIM” invites everyone to communicate together in Malaysian Sign Language. The series ran every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM on Zoom, with the meeting link shared through JUPEBIM’s WhatsApp and Telegram groups.

A Community Gathering in Sign Language
This Friday evening session drew more than 20 participants from across the community. Throughout the session, members took part in an open roundtable discussion conducted in BIM.

They shared experiences, raised questions and learned from one another in a relaxed and supportive setting.

The session ended on a warm note. Participants gathered for a group photo, many of them signing “I Love You”, a sign widely used across Deaf communities to express friendship and solidarity.

Why Jom BerBIM Matters

The Jom BerBIM Roundtable Series gave members a regular space to:

  • Practise and strengthen their Malaysian Sign Language skills.
  • Discuss real challenges faced by interpreters and Deaf community members.
  • Build friendships and partnerships between Deaf and hearing members.
  • Stay connected as a community, even while physical gatherings were limited.

Keeping the Community Connected
Sessions like this reflect JUPEBIM’s belief that strong interpreting starts with a strong community. By meeting regularly online, members continued to learn together and support each other. They also kept Malaysian Sign Language at the heart of their conversations.
